About

Amref Health Africa (Amref), was founded in 1957 and has since grown to become the largest African-based international health development organization. In Africa Amref creates the conditions for equitable access to health through health care and training interventions, maternal and child health programs, child protection, access to water and sanitation and women’s empowerment. Every year, more than 30 million people are reached through active projects in 35 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.  Amref’s international network also operates in Europe, the United States and Canada through 11 offices engaged in planning, advocacy and fundraising. In Italy since 1987, Amref keeps a careful eye on the national context, with a particular focus on integration, social and health inclusion, the fight against gender-based violence (in particular with respect to female genital mutilation) and the fight against Afrophobia. In addition, Amref promotes a more correct narrative of the African continent to overcome  prejudices and  stereotypes.  The experience gained over years of work and with communities in the most vulnerable areas of sub-Saharan Africa allows, also in Italy, to promote methodologies aimed at strengthening health systems, training social and health workers, actions to combat gender-based violence and raising awareness among young people on global citizenship education, combating systemic racism and the promotion of health as a universal right.
